Left4Dead2 is the second zombie game that I played next to Plants vs Zombies and the only zombie shooter of its genre that I've known. Sure there are a lot of zombie shooters out there that I have yet to play and I might be bias because of it but we are talking about the OG here. Even today the game is still being updated but mostly bug fixes, the latest major content update was in july 2023 featuring The Sacrifice campaign.
The story follows a group of survivors in an apocalyptic world where a virus turns almost everyone into zombies except for the resistant few. The virus spread in a matter of days and the survivors has to traverse the zombie strickened city. Armed with guns and melee weapons, they hacked and shot their way through, hoping to escape the impending doom for those who are unable to get out.
The game is divided into multiple campaign in a chronological order but the plot in each one is so different that they don't seem connected at all. It starts by choosing from one of the survivors which are Nick, Rochelle, Coach and Ellis. Picking a character doesn't give any advantages also Left4Dead 1 and 2 is so intertwined that some Left4Dead 1 campaigns can also be found in Left4Dead 2 and so are the characters of both versions. Progress is very linear that follows the story well, the only random things are field weapons and the placement of special zombies. The game is played in a first person perspective which is common with shooter games, the melee aspect is basic but still a good addition. Shooting and slashing multiple zombies kind of gives a feeling of euphoria and the intense fight when you encounter special zombies like tanks are scary and so much fun. Campaign usually starts in a safe area and from there you traverse to the game world environment, killing zombies, picking up weapons and health supplies along the way until you reach the safe house and another episode will commence, rinse and repeat. There are 3-4 episodes in each campaign, some only have 1 episode. If there's one thing I don't like about the gameplay is the mob griefing like intentionally placing witches on stairs, chargers on elevated places that could kill you for absurd reasons.
The game was released on november 2009 which makes the game graphics a little bit dated but good nonetheless. Personally I like the darker tone of older games than the shiny ones which made the game less scary, specially if it's a horror genre. Also one good thing about older games is that every potato hardware can run them much more nicely and that opens to a bigger market of players. Furthermore there are mods you can find in the steam workshop that offers HD textures for the game assets including weapons, zombies, characters and other fun stuff like animations.
Very memorable and suits along with the game atmosphere.
